1. Once 2. Ashes
Upon the ivory Trying to be flames
There came a melody And playing sinful games
Of those who fell in love To steal what was lost
And dreams worth dreaming of No matter what the cost
With new life in sight Advice turns to lies
They entered the night For doubts to arise
Of sorrow's twilight And slowly conquer
2. Say 3. Run
The words that aren't enough The easy thing to do
I'm sorry--ain't it tough? And so befitting you
To swallow all your pride The coward's way to cope
Admit the times you've lied It's just a gallows rope
When push comes to shove No more will I flee
You sell out your love The darkness in me
To pay the piper I shout defiance
5. Once
Upon the ivory
A child formed a key
Unlocking what's been done
The two become as one
It's never too late
To alter your fate
And walk in sunlight

Yes, the progression is repetitive. No, I don't particularly care much. :)
This song is meant to be put to lyrics and should be taken as such.
The entire melody to Once Upon the Ivory was written in the
delivery room at Valley Medical Center while I was waiting for
my son to come out and take his first breath. The inspirations
are many... at the time, and through much of the subsequent time,
my relationship was in a shambles and teetering on the edge of
oblivion. Now... well, perhaps if you cannot draw inference from
the lyrics, you may never understand. But for those who do... this
song is for all of you who have labored to create something
special and unique, and for once in your life found something
that, no matter what, you will fight for, live for, change for,
and suffer for... and found it to be worth every moment.
Sample credits - As usual, I'm not even going to try for a precise count.
Sample 3 is mine originally, off a fairly crappy keyboard that
nonetheless had the right sound for filling out this song. The
rest are a conglomeration--mostly Gravis patches and old Amiga
samples, but a handful of more modern samples from such sources
as Necros, Skaven, Zapper, et cetera. To anyone I forgot, if you
see a sample of yours in there, consider yourself well-appreciated
for what you contributed to this song.
Greets go out to, in no particular order: Dude, Dream Scythe, Big Skaven
and little Skaven :), Pulse, Mickrip, Mikmak, Luvk, Vegas, Fass,
and everyone who has ever loved unconditionally.
