He caught the sound of footsteps up the stairs, despite the thundering of
his own pulse beating an eerie rhythm in his head. The footsteps grew

The bedroom door flew open. He stormed in.

Jimmy knew it was pointless pleading. Nonetheless, he begged his drunken
father not to hit him tonight. He was convulsing with fear.
