Waste Meat

This song was quite a long project that I started back in November 2000.
Initially I planned it to be another entry for SunDew Ordinary Compo,
trying to parodise my wannabe-dance style. That's why it was originally
called "Double Treat", to repeat my tendency of double-pieces.

However, when I started the actual tracking process, the track turned out
to be too good for the Ordinary Compo. For some time I had been planning
to make a song about the facts of life that would be called "Waste Meat".
I realised this could be it. And as the two concepts are quite closely
related, I mixed those ideas with the ones I had already tracked and the
project was underway.

From the very beginning I knew that this piece would have to have
full-length lyrics. And the lyrics would be something very carefully
thought, not such impulse lyrics that I sometimes do. I guess now that I'm
through the whole process I can safely say that I spent almost as much
time writing the lyrics as in the actual tracking, making it only the
third very important song of mine with full lyrics, after Jovian Skylight
and Altamira.

When the Christmas started coming closer I thought I'd make WM into a
present for everyone. However, there wasn't much time and after I had gone
home for the holidays I had to continue the tracking at Saturnina's
Kajaani residence. After long hours I got it finished and presented in a
Christmas party the resulted early version, called "Waste Meat (A Tribute
to the Man Kind)".

But I wasn't still completely pleased with the song. I knew it could be
much better and it had already got such a significant personal meaning
that I couldn't just drop the project by considering it finished. So
during the winter and early spring 2001 I continued to do improvements to
WM until in March I was finally satisfied. 

After that I still took some time to polish the lyrics and decided I'd
release it on 4.4. that was also otherwise a very important day because it
was the official opening date for SunDew Pop Compo 2001. To my great joy,
that day I also got my first ever real job, making it even more
significant.

Well, that was the story behind the song. Maybe now's time to say
something about the piece itself. In my own genre classifications I'd say
it's mostly dance/disco, with a strong pop flavour. I know people do have
very different opinions about the styles and what really is which but
that's what I think.

It's funny how all my fastest (or danciest) songs always tend to end up
being mainly in minor chords, like for example Insignificant Other and
Double Shame. Waste Meat definitely belongs to the same family with those
two, being the conclusion of a series, just like Nevergreen concluded the
earlier pop thread.

So without any further talking, I hope you like the song. It may not be
musically the best I've done but as a wholeness it's clearly one of the
brightest. At least the lyrics are the best I've done. I guess that's
because of all the time spent with them and also that I really felt like
putting something from myself into them. So, enjoy!
