Long ago, while on a solitary hike through the woods, I had suffered a
near-death experience. I had fallen from a great height when I'd slipped
near the top of a steep ridge. I managed to grab on to a nearby tree
branch on the way down, however, the branch proved difficult to maintain
a hold on, so almost immediately after, I'd lost my grip and plummeted
over 15 feet to land in the bed of a shallow stream.
I lost consciousness.
I thought I heard music.
When I came to, I picked myself up, battered, wet and bruised, and headed
home. That branch had probably saved my life.
On rare occasion, I'd faintly hear that quiet song in the back of my mind,
usually when it was nighttime, quiet and gently snowing. Whether it was
the cold, dark or the silence that triggered the memory I'm not sure.
Believe it or not, this is where this song came from; Extracted and
reconstructed from fragments of a memory somewhere from the edge of
consciousness. I don't know If I'd done it any justice, but I hope
you like it just the same.
