Aftersence

  My memories... How strange - they come back like a snowball rolling,
one detail bringing along cascade of thoughts and flashbacks long
forgotten. How deep this pit in my head is, I wonder. Places I've been to,
people I've met. I no longer remember your name, my friend. Only your
stories about your work at Dinamic, the Spanish gem of ZX-Spectrum
game developers. Or the lone thiteen hours at the plane, Boeing
seven-something-whatever, listening the noise of turbines.
  The brightly lit stage, where I receive a medal and a prize from
somebody, and the feeling of accomplishment... As if I'm really clever.
  As if... These are just my memories, aren't they? So I let my
imagination play with them. What if I hadn't broken my glasses on the hard
dorm floor, back there in Taiwan? Maybe I would have won another medal...
And seen so many things, the scenes from a different places, different
lives. Like that walk to the temple - it's still the brightest memory from
all those events. Thank you, Vera.
  I have to wake up, to do something. Not because, I just have to. To get
a life, as they say. To become "normal", if there ever can be such thing
as a normal programmer. To learn how to have fun, and what's the hangover
like...
  Or not. I am myself, and I don't need to change that. I don't have to
change. My memories return, and I can imagine you being here. The presence
of past - aftersence? Sounds appropriate. Your ghost in my memories. Your
aftersence besides me.
