A brief historical review:
The First World War was called the Great War, but
it was also dubbed "the war to end all wars": loss
of life and land devastation on such a scale had
never been seen before, and all nations began making
treaties and associations that would eliminate war as
a means to resolve differences between countries.
Following their treaty obligations, most nations began
either reducing their armament stocks and/or failing to
renew their system for better and improved ones.
Unfortunately, a few demagogs saw this as an opportunity
to seize control of the world; if the other nations were
disarming, they would be an easy prey for a well equipped
and trained army! So, in secrecy, they armed themselves
and, when they estimated that their power was sufficient,
began marching on their neighbours...
Once the world had understood what was going on, rebuilt
their arsenals, and defeated these tyrants, the armories
of the world remained filled and renewed, and, to this
day, though there have been minor conflicts, there has
yet to be another one of the amplitude of the "war to end
all wars"...
Hence, one must conclude that, unfortunately, history has
shown that peace can only be insured by fear of war...
Lyrics (log entries):
"August 3rd, 3:26pm. Well, looks like being hundreds of miles
away from the front lines won't do us much good, since we had
a bombing raid last night. All we got over here was a couple
of good shakes, but Bob's house got hit right in the backside;
the blast kicked the darned thing about a foot off its founda-
tion! The worst part, though, was when they dug little Steevie
out of there... Only one casualty from the whole raid, and
they had to pick a seven year old..."
"September 2nd, 9:31pm. Well, at least now I know why we're
getting bombed; according to the military stationned out here,
apparently they think we've got an underground ammunition
factory over here! I guess that even if we try every trick we
can think of to tell them that we don't, they wouldn't believe
us anyways, so... I guess we'll just have to live with it!
..either that or ship out... ...but where would -- speak of the
devil, here we go again..."
"October 25th, 11:42am. There was a pretty fierce raid yesterday.
From what I hear, they've tallied about 200 dead and something in
the likes of 800 injured. They're using the high school as a
make-shift hospital since the real one got hit pretty hard...
The word is that many of the injured won't survive too long because
they can't scrape nearly enough medical supplies and equipment from
the heap that's left for even a third of those poor people..."
"November 13th, 7:36pm. They say it's gonna be at least a couple of
weeks before the water treatment and pumping plant is operationnal
again, so in the meantime, we have to go to the river with buckets
and what not to get water... Well at least we've still got power,
so we can at least boil it before drinking it."
"December 24th, 5:06pm. I guess it's ironic that the big pine tree
we'd decorated in the town square got a direct hit last night. Oh,
we found another one and fixed it up, but it just isn't the same...
I guess that, since Alice got killed last month while fetching water,
there isn't much to celebrate anyways... Looks like the only
Christmas Spirit left around here is that bottle of Johnny Walker
I've got stashed in the cellar!"
