"Environmental catastrophes have recently recieved much public attention
due to the concern of environmental groups, who in turn have been aided in
their cause by media sensationalism; a spectacular environmental disaster
is now front-page news. However, Municipal and industrial sources put
nearly three times as much oil pollution into the sea as all tanker
accidents combined. Behind many spectacular disasters is the compounding
effects of incremental neglect." 

"No example of such a compound effect is more relevant to Western Society
than the dream-turned-nightmare of car ownership. If cars once claimed to
save us travel time , their popularity and accessibility now causes
chronic traffic congestion in every major city in the world. The
compounding effect of time spent in cars and on regular car maintenance
means that American motorists now spend on average of one hour with their
car to travel just four miles - which is slower than bicycle travel."
