"The Angstiest Song in the World" by Cthulu / Mistigris May 1998 One lone night, Cthulu is up late trying to think of some poem to compose for Scrambled Angst, a reading series held at The Sugar Refinery (1115 Granville St., upstairs, in Vancouver, first sunday of every month) put on by Curtis and Barbara (who are known collectively as The Really Awful Poets.) Lo and behold, Cthulu lets these terms mull around in his head a bit and, coupled with a prevaling theme on #poetry (EFNet), decides to write, in a really awful style, the angstiest poem in the world! But one man cannot succeed at such an undertaking alone. I recruited the aid of those in the channel at the time (including Dracomage, LIFE-, Dyer and a few others) and together, we composed the angstiest poem in the world. This was promptly forgotten about. Ahh, background information. Some months later, Cthulu is wondering what to read for this monthly instalment, and recalls this satirical composition of particular angstiness. In an effort to outdo his previous presentation of plumbing pornography (no shit) he resolved to make a multimedia poetry presentation the next month - words and music. For this he would enrol the help of Josh Broyles, a very interesting computer music fellow I met at the very first SA reading who was ultimately unsuccessful in accompanying me due to the untimely breakage of his serial port... and in addition to the planned accompaniment of Josh's randomly-generated "dopamine roller-coaster", I would track some nine-inch-nails-ish music (that really is the angstiest, you know) to back the poem. Thus, this. The rhythms really are based around speech fragments and phrases, and perhaps in some far-flung future an .MP3 version complete with lyrics will be released on CD or something. For now you'll have to be content with the text of the poem included as sample 65. Don't slit your wrists now, dear, but if you simply must, remember, go parallel to the vein.
