Comment

I love early autumn with its bright colours and brisk sunny days, but when
the leaves turn brown and the rains begin - well, I just can't stand it.
Watching the life be slowly drained out of everything always brings me
down way too heavily, and what's worse, the depression seems to strike me
earlier and more painfully each year. There's supposed to be more light
than in the winter, but it's not real, decent light - the disgustingly
thick and grey cloud layer absorbs all the light out of the sun's rays,
leaving nothing but a gloomy non-light, a mere absence of darkness. Once
the autumn depression gets a hold of me, my consumption of sugar and
alcohol goes soaring up, and there's no hope of getting anything done
until first snow.

The worst thing about autumn depression is that there's no cure: red wine,
chocolate and sad music can take away the symptoms for a while, but if you
want to get rid of the disease, there's nothing you can do, save pray for
an early winter. For whereas autumn is death, winter is protection; it
casts its pure white veil over the land to shelter it from the piercing
cold and to help it survive till the warm spring sun signals the beginning
of a new cycle of birth and growth. Though it's cold and dark, there's
hope of another spring and summer in every glistening snow-clad tree and
every star in the clear night sky.

(OK, OK! I promise I'll skip the poetry next time!)

With warmth and friendship to Anna the autumn-lover - I don't even pretend
to understand how you manage to actually like that horrid season, but I
sure as heck wish I could learn it too...

Well, now it's really finished at last! I didn't expect it to take this
long, but I had another one of those awkward periods when you can't get
yourself to do a goddamn thing even though there's a million things you
ought to. I sincerely don't know if I'd ever have completed this project
if it weren't for the acquisition of some yummy new gear in March 2000; I
replaced several samples with better ones obtained from my new favourite
toy, the Roland JV-1010 synth module. For some reason, though, I was
completely unable to produce decent piano samples - thanks to Mr. Eassa
for the ones I've used - and I also couldn't get the loop on the EG sample
quite right. Well, you have to draw a line somewhere, and frankly I'm
getting pretty fed up with this bugger hanging around unfinished and
unreleased on my drive, so here you have it. Maybe I'll work up an mp3
version some day with real flute and stuff.

The somewhat "raw" version released at Elevator 3 actually ended up on 7th
place in the multichannel compo - frankly, I was pretty surprised, since I
didn't expect anyone but the jury would ever even hear it. Special
greetings to Humppa-Ake, Keskitalo, Juippi, Wayout, Jokke + Titti M. and
very special thanks to all who voted for me. I would also like to thank
Novus and Mr. Blue for sharing their thoughts on the compo version while I
was working on the final release.
