        Early travelers to Ephesus in Asia Minor
        viewed with wonder the overwhelming
        splendors of the Temple of Artemis, or
        Diana. They came away praising its magnificence,
        and they spread its fame throught the ancient world.
        
        This greatest and finest of the Greek temples
        in Asia Minor had a stormy history. It
        was orginally erected in 620 B.C. on the site
        of a small, earlier temple, and soon became
        a place of pilgrimage for all Greece and Asia
        Minor. Croesus, the rich King of Lydia, is
        said to have presented the Ephesians with
        columns for their temple sometime during 
        the sixth century B.C. He also gave them images
        of cows made of gold for the temple's
        adornment.

        During the passage of centuries, the temple
        was destroyed and rebuilt seven or eight 
        times as Ephesus fell under the dominion of
        various kings and conquerors. A fire destroyed
        the temple in 356 B.C. Out of the smoking
        ruins, the people of Ephesus rebuilt it more
        splendidly then before. The Ephesian women
        contributed their most cherished trinkets to 
        the fund raiser for the reconstruction. It was
        this restored building that was considered one 
        of the world's seven great wonders.
