                          "Flight  to  the  clouds"

This song is based on a poem written be John G. Magee Jr., whose Sonnet
"High Flight" inspired me to write this song.  Magee was a World War ][
pilot from the US who had a love of poetry, and wrote this a few weeks
before his death.  Two days later, he entered thick clouds in his
single-engine plane and collided with another plane head on, killing both
men instantly.  His parents back in the US received a letter a few weeks
later containing the poem, which has lived since as a literary
masterpeice.

        "Oh, I have slipped the surly bonds of earth
       And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings
       Sunward I've climbed a joined the tumbling mirth
       Of sun-split clouds and done a hundred things

       You have not dreamed of - wheeled and soared and swung
       High in the sunlit silence.  How ring there
       I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung
       My eager craft through footless halls of air

       Up, up the long delerious burning blue
       I've topped the windswept heights with easy grace
       Where never lark or even eagle flew
       And while with silent, lifting mind I've trod
       The high untrespassed sanctity of space
       Put out my hand and touched the face of God"
