........................................................ . . A D i f f e r e n t S k y . . . ............................................... . . . a Music Contest 5 entry by Liam the lemming . . ........................................................ . [ Process 5 . Kosmic Free Music Foundation . Twain ] . ........................................................ ___________________________________________________ Final placing: highest non-qualifier block [21-30] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Hmm, what to say? I like this tune. All the people I previewed it to before MC5 (oh c'mon, who didn't? :) ) liked it. When I pointed it out to Necros he said "hmm, top 5?" =) And then it bombed. Damn. No matter. I'll let the comments speak for themselves... -- + -- Rafal Wysocki said: ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "Excellent. It's pleasing to listen to songs like this, although it's not my preffered style of music." I guess that was always gonna be a problem. ;) H.vard Kv.len said: ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "A nice melody. The technical tracking is good. A click in the beginning of several of the samples drags down." At least I have the technical side figured out. =) Thomas Carey said: ~~~~~~~~~~~~ "Wow. Hats off to you for taking some of the most unoriginal samples known to man and making a great song. While the samples are obviously taken from another well-known song, they are used originally, nearly surpassing the tune from which they have been taken. This song flows beautifully, and remains interesting throughout. It has a strong beginning, climax, and ending. You could have chosen a bit more appropriate of perucssion samples, but the actual rhythm of the tune compliments the rest of the tune quite well. Nicely done tune, overall." Ooh. "Nearly surpassing the tune from which they have been taken"? I'll explain; the original guitar samples were those from Big Jim's Dreaming Of Foreign Skies, which I replaced with Leviathan's guitar samples from Duet (also entered in MC5, same final position as my tune). DOFS, of course, scored a rating of ***** (seriously) on the Hornet Archive - the highest possible rating. And this comment says I almost surpassed it. Now THAT'S critical acclaim. =) Dustin Crenna said: ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "This was a great song. Smooth melody with crisp leads, and a great chord progression. The speed/tempo changing effect was really well done, and the song was always changing, and was interesting. Definitely the best song that I've had to judge thus far. It isn't the best mod I've ever heard in my life, but it is definitely one to add to the collection." Well, it was never gonna be the best; my percussion just sucks TOO much. ;) Abe Gong said: ~~~~~~~~ "This was a very well done guitar duet. Great beat and a solid melody, harmony, and eventually good drums- though those take a while to develop (I have no problem with that). The melody is great, especially the modulations and effects. The organ accompaniment was original- I hadn't heard that type of combination before. When the song "takes off" in pattern 21, it sounds truly incredible. The sequence of patterns 21-29 was fantastic- the single best section I think I have ever heard. The rest of the song was great too. This is one of the few songs I judged that wasn't tedious to listen to more than twice." You know, it's comments like this that are in danger of giving me an ego. :) "Very well done", "great beat", "eventually good drums", "melody is great, especially the modulations and effects", "organ accompaniment was original", "(from pattern 21) it sounds truly incredible. The sequence of patterns 21-29 were fantastic"... From a comment like this, you'd think I'd done NOTHING wrong. =) Thanks Abe! Brandon Rogers said: ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "The song has a nice "downstream" flow to it. All of the instruments came together very well." I knew the "mellow" style would win votes. =) -- + -- Greets to Argh, EagleFalcon, Luv Kohli, Alamone, Prizrak, Nitris and all the other people who help me iron out all the faults in my tunes before I release them. Without them, this tune would REALLY suck. ;) Greets also to the people who judged my tunes in MC5 and MC6. I'm thrilled you enjoyed them so much. A few more marks would have been nice, but never mind that. ;D Oh yeah... greets to Kosmic, and Welti, my Twain affiliate. :) You know, you just can't DO greets like this in a pokey little sampletext. :) I really believe I'm getting somewhere now. I'm getting better at percussion (my greatest weakness), I'm choosing my samples more carefully (another weakness of mine), I'm finally getting the hang of my mixing (a MAJOR weakness), I'm exploring new styles (admittedly, this is going a little slowly, but I'm giving it a shot ;) ) and I'm practising my skills all the time by identifying the flaws and weaknesses in other people's songs and "tweaking" them. (No, I don't release them. No, you *can't* have my tweaked version of Pools Of Poison, shush. :D ) But most importantly, I'm being much more careful. Cos you don't win Music Contest unless you're careful. ;) Lemm
