It is about a young man - or a boy perhaps - whom the fate made
leave his former life, the fields at peaceful countryside where
he was brought up, his family, the bonnie lass he loved.

So it came for him, he entered the war for the independence of his
homeland from the invaders.

And so, we can find him in an occupied town, hidden from enemy
bombs, armed patrols... sitting with other people in a devastated
building, all possible dangers of the war around, so terrifying
and so close to him.

He dreams took him back about his family land... to the fields,
the green grass, the crops, his young siblings plaing and laughing
on the grass. He dreamed about sun shining over his green land,
about storms and winds making the field wave...

In his dreams he saw his sweet love... On the grass she was sitting,
and smiling at him... inviting him to sit beside her.

The young man didn't see the destroyed town anymore... he was in the
green valley of his happiest days. And he was back in those days,
although he did not understand why he couldn't be happy in his maid's
arms...

He wrote a poem on a piece of paper. He wrote it with coal he had
found by chance... It was a marvellous poem. All his deepest feelings,
so strongly and magnificently expressed were written on that dirty
sheet, with a rough black lump of coal.

A week later, another soldier stepped on it, not even noticing it,
he was in so great a hurry...

Two weeks later the sheet was covered with remains of the house...

Nobody has ever read it.


How did it continue then...? Did he stay there, underneath the debris?
Or - might be - he just had his chance to go back to the fields - not
only in his dreams this time, but in the reality - his mother's and father's...
and the girl of his...?

Well...

I don't know.

Cooth - 2003 - for the Spectrum Music Competition

This theme was inspired a bit by all the people who had the bad luck
to be in the Second World War, as well as in other wars around the
world... All wars are so incredibly stupid...

It's especially about those young, who could have expected a life
in happiness, love and peace... but had to face the horror of war,
unexplainable hostility and hatred.
